Come Away With Me by Karma Brown – 368 pages

Book Blurb:

One minute, Tegan Lawson has everything she could hope for: an adoring husband, Gabe, and a baby on the way. The next, a patch of black ice causes a devastating accident that will change her life in ways she never could have imagined. Tegan is consumed by grief, not to mention her anger toward Gabe, who was driving on the night of the crash. But just when she thinks she’s hit rock bottom, Gabe reminds her of their Jar of Spontaneity, a collection of their dream destinations and experiences, and so begins an adventure of a lifetime. From the bustling markets of Thailand to the flavors of Italy to the ocean waves in Hawaii, Tegan and Gabe embark on a journey to escape the tragedy and search for forgiveness. But they soon learn that grief follows you no matter how far away you run, and that acceptance comes when you least expect it.

Come Away With Me is a heartbreaking story about the power of love and the tragedy of love lost. This book is a favorite pick for many readers and I really did enjoy it (my 3.5 rating states that) but I had a hard time liking the main character, more on that later because it will contain a spoiler.

I fully escaped into the travel aspect of this book. I have 100% added Thailand to my list of places to visit. I absolutely want a painting made by elephants! I’ve been to the other two locales and the author beautifully portrayed their magic. The author’s voice is luminous and smart with dialogue. You can see that in the quotes I liked below.

The idea of the spontaneity jar was a good one and the sights and sounds of Chicago were very realistic. I’d happily recommend this as an excellent beach read.

SPOILER ALERT: Back to Tegan, the main protagonist. Her grief was evident and completely absorbing, I get that. But I just found her selfish to the point of unlikeable. Yes, the “twist” explains some of that behavior however by the time that part arrived in the book I’d already made up my mind.

Quotes I liked:

I am not a good drunk, if there is such a thing.”

-“If someone told me you could love and hate a person so completely, at the same time, I would have said no way. But I would’ve been wrong.”

-“People hold tight to bursting shopping bags full of treasures sure to at least temporarily make their lives better.”

-“It’s more that those flaws become part of you, as a couple. And they make your strengths shine brighter, which is what allows that love to change. It’s knowing someone deeply, and loving him or her in spite of the things that drive you crazy. And that, my sweet girl, takes time.”
