Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwanā Audio
Book Blurb:
When New Yorker Rachel Chu agrees to spend the summer in Singapore with her boyfriend, Nicholas Young, she envisions a humble family home and quality time with the man she hopes to marry. But Nick has failed to give his girlfriend a few key details. One, that his childhood home looks like a palace; two, that he grew up riding in more private planes than cars; and three, that he just happens to be the countryās most eligible bachelor.Ā On Nickās arm, Rachel may as well have a target on her back the second she steps off the plane, and soon, her relaxed vacation turns into an obstacle course of old money, new money, nosy relatives, and scheming social climbers.
My Review: 3 stars
Crazy Rich Asians has been on my TBR since it came out in 2013. It received at ton of positive reviews, so much so, that the movie adaptation is coming out soon. The movie has wrapped, yet there is no set release date. The casting looks spot on and Iām sure it will do well for those who enjoyed the book and the inordinate amount of high-end fashion references.
For me, this book didnāt live up to my high expectations. Perhaps, had I read it when it first came out, I would have expected less and enjoyed it for what it was. Of all the story lines, I really only cared about Rachelās. I just had no patience for the endless talk of money, jewelry, designers and excess. I know much of this was satirical, but still, it was just too much for me.
What I most enjoyed about this book were the amazing descriptions of Singapore. I could smell the foods they ate and the majestic scenery came to life. The author excelled at making Singapore real for the reader.
Quotes I liked:
āJust because some people actually work for their money doesnāt mean they are beneath you.ā
-āI take fifty milligrams of amitriptyline every night, and then an extra ten milligrams of Ambien if I really want to sleep through the night. Sometimes I add a Lunesta, and if that doesnāt work, I get out the Valium.”
āDoing nothing can sometimes be the most effective form of action.ā
