I’ll Give You The Sun by Jandy Nelson– 371 pages

Book Blurb:

Jude and her twin brother, Noah, are incredibly close. At thirteen, isolated Noah draws constantly and is falling in love with the charismatic boy next door, while daredevil Jude cliff-dives and wears red-red lipstick and does the talking for both of them. But three years later, Jude and Noah are barely speaking. Something has happened to wreck the twins in different and dramatic ways . . . until Jude meets a cocky, broken, beautiful boy, as well as someone else—an even more unpredictable new force in her life. The early years are Noah’s story to tell. The later years are Jude’s. What the twins don’t realize is that they each have only half the story, and if they could just find their way back to one another, they’d have a chance to remake their world.

Oh my stars this book took me for a ride. The plot was not that new, but the writing style was a completely new experience. This author specializes in the art of metaphors and uses them freely and continually. They were telling, artistic, original and symbolic. Personally, I loved it and it introduced me to this unique way of telling a story. The “bible” quotes throughout the book added a good dose of humor and the “Self-Portraits” that Noah saw in his head were absolutely spot on. This may be considered a YA book, but it is definitely for the older bracket, I’d say 15+. This book delves into sexuality, mourning, destiny, family and love. There’s been a lot of hype about this title and I’m right on board with it’s many accolades.

Quotes I liked:

“Maybe some people are just meant to be in the same story.”

-“I didn’t know you could get buried in your own silence.”

-“We wish with our hands, that’s what we do as artists.”

-“Meeting your soul mate is like walking into a house you’ve been in before – you will recognize the furniture, the pictures on the wall, the books on the shelves, the contents of drawers: You could find your way around in the dark if you had to.”

-“I love pizza, meaning: Even when I’m in the middle of eating pizza, I wish I were eating pizza…
