The Martian by Andy Weir- 369 pages
Book Blurb:
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he’s sure he’ll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him & forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded & completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that heβs aliveβ& even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won’t have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment or plain-old “human error” are much more likely to kill him first. But Mark isn’t ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skillsβ& a relentless, dogged refusal to quitβhe steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?

The Martian is a one of a kind page-turner. Itβs an amazing story of survival, brilliance, quick wittedness and laugh out loud humor. Iβve never read a book in which I could so easily breeze through the science, chemistry and biology and still highly enjoy it.
This book is 100% plot driven with a highly likable main character whoΒ is stock full of sarcasm. Itβs the perfect equation for a successful book.
The movie comes out soon and I canβt even begin to imagine it. I wonβt spill who plays the main character so you still have time to read it and use your own mindβs eye to build the images.
Excellent, quick read!
Quotes I liked:
Jesus Christ, Iβd give anything for a five-minute conversation with anyone. Anyone, anywhere. About anything.β
-βItβs kind of silly if you think about it. Iβm in my space suit on mars and Iβm navigating with sixteenth-century tools. But hey, they work.β
-βYes, of course duct tape works in a near-vacuum. Duct tape works anywhere. Duct tape is magic and should be worshiped.β
Loved this read ! I too was not turned off by the science. This was a random pick from the bookstore and it was a favorite of the year.
Deanne, I agree although there were some scientific parts I did skim over. π I loved the main characters’s humor and resilience!
